From April – September we offer the half-day Ghyll Scrambling in Eskdale & Wasdale as part of a programme of activities which run during the key school holidays - you can simply book spaces onto one of the sessions that are already running

About Ghyll Scrambling – The Half-day!

Ghyll scrambling in the Lake District is an exhilarating and fun activity perfect for families or groups who want a challenge, making it one of our most popular activities!

Guided by our highly experienced and qualified instructors, you will make your way up a mountain stream whilst having so much fun along the way. This is a wet activity, so you can expect to be plunging into clear pools, swimming against flowing water, climbing up the side of waterfalls, exploring caves and sliding down water shoots along the way in the beautiful Western Lake District valleys of Eskdale & Wasdale.

Activity Duration: 3 - 4 Hours

Minimum Age: 8 Years - Must be over the hieght of 135cm.

A moderate level of fitness is required for this activity - The Ghyll can be a challenging environment, especially if we have had any rain fall.

PLEASE NOTE: Our Open Group Activities require adult supervision if under the age of 18.

Canyoning - The Esk Gorge

The Esk Gorge Extreme Canyoning is a step up on all levels from Ghyll Scrambling in the Eskdale Valley.

This activity is an extreme level of Lake District ghyll scrambling with bigger jumps, bigger climbs, bigger water and its remote location makes this activity one of the most challenging and exhillerating activities we offer!

Activity Duration: 5 - 6 Hours

Minimum Age: 16

A Good level of fitness is required for this activity.

Open Group Activity Sessions
  • During the season we offer a programme of open activity taster sessions, you can join these as part of a group already running.
  • They are bookable online via the calendars on the activity page or via the book now menu tab at the top of the page.
  • These group sessions  will give you the full experience of the activity.
  • Please make sure you meet the required age, hieght and fitness criteria before making a booking.

Kit Details

Why not try ghyll scrambling as part of a multi-activity day and combine with another activity for a fun packed full day of adventure.

What’s Included

Specialist equipment of the highest standard is included - No smelly damp kit is given out here!  Each wetsuit, wet socks, over trousers and cagouls are machine washed and fully dried after every use, all other kit is sanitised and cleaned thouroughly.

Equipment includes:

  • Wetsuit
  • Wet socks
  • Overtrousers and Cagoul
  • Helmet
  • Harness
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Esk Gorge - you will be supplied with a back pack to carry kit.
  • Gloves are given out in the colder months.

What you need:

  • Something to wear under a wetsuit - Swim wear or shorts & a non-cotton T-shirt
  • Sturdy boots or trainers which can be laced up.  Due to the terrain, plimsoles, sandals, wet shoes and Crocs are NOT suitable.
  • Dry clothing for after the activity
  • Towel
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Esk Gorge - Packed Lunch
