Canoeing England's Deepest Lake - Wastwater

Experience canoeing on one of England remotest and most impressive lakes.

Your journey will take you on the deepest lake in England, Wastwater was once voted Britain's Favourite View (2007).  Wastwater is a tranquil and impressive lake with spectacular views and has an impressive steep scree that delves into the waters of the deepest lake in England, it also boasts some of the most dramatic & stunning mountain’s views the Lake District has to offer and is a SSSI (Sites of scientific interests) due to its natural heritage.

Whilst canoeing, your guide will teach you some basic paddling skills as well as some local knowledge of Wasdale and this iconic Lake.

These are half-day adventures, which will give you an introduction to paddling a canoe under the guidance of our experienced and qualified instructors.

A low - moderate level of fitness is required for this activity, minimum age applies, Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement on privately booked canoe sessions.

The River Canoe - A River Esk Journey

As part of this adventure, you will start in the beautiful and ancient village of Ravenglass which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before setting out on the incoming tide and heading up the estuary, into the river and towards the Eskdale Valley.
With views out towards the Isle of Man and inland towards Scafell Pike and the Lake District, it is a truly stunning voyage. When we reach the high point we will stop for a snack or some lunch, depending on the time of day, and as the tide turns, we will return with it, back into Ravenglass 
Please note: this activity is dependent on the tide so can only run at certain times.

A good level of fitness is required for this activity, it is a 5-6 hour journey so you will need to bring along a packed lunch and some snacks for the trip.  Minimum age applies.

Canoe & Bushcraft - The Wasdale Valley

What better way to spend a day than canoeing on Wastwater whilst throwing in a little bushcraft along the way!
You will be surrounded by the most spectacular scenery learning some valuable paddling skills and basic understanding of bushcraft.
This is not a survival course; it is a fun but educational journey where you will be learning the basic skills of canoeing and bushcraft as well as plant and tree identification and the understanding of the natural environment and how to enjoy it whilst respecting your surroundings.
Your journey will take you on the deepest lake in England, Wastwater. Wastwater is a tranquil and impressive lake with spectacular views and has an impressive steep scree that delves into the waters of the deepest lake in England, it also boasts some of the most dramatic & stunning mountain’s views the Lake District has to offer.
Whilst canoeing, your guide will teach you some basic paddling skills, bring along a packed lunch for your journey and once we have had a bite to eat, we will set up our bushcraft camp in the woodland beside the lake.
We will practice skills such as plant and tree identification, collect wood to help light a small fire (in a fire pit), we will have a go at lighting some tinder using a flint and steel and also have a go at friction fire lighting using a bow drill.
Once we have an ember, we will light our pit and toast marshmallows, earning your dessert and making some S'mores and we can also whip up a brew using our Kelly Kettle, with aa choice of a cuppa tea or hot chocolate.
We will also build a basic camp using tarps and hammocks and natural resources.

You will need a moderate level of fitness for this activity, the duration is 6 hours so a packed lunch is required.  Minimum age applies.

Kit Details

Why not try Canoeing as part of a multi-activity day and combine with another activity for a fun packed full day of adventure.

What you need:

  • Wear clothing suitable for the weather on the day.
  • Pack extra warm clothing and a full set of waterproofs (just in case).
  • Wear shoes you don't mend getting wet (or Wellingtons).
  • Pack a full set of spare clothing to keep in the car (just in case).
  • Snacks and drinks (packed lunch for full day excursions).

We advise you leave all expensive mobiles and cameras behind.
