About Us | Steve Ashall | West Lakes Adventure | Eskdale
Steve set up West Lakes Adventure in April 2010 after taking voluntary redundancy from his job of 17 years working in the outdoor industry.
Brought up in Wigan, he was lucky enough to attend a school trip in the Eskdale Valley, at the time he found the experience life changing & the area spectacular, this overwhelming experience was now engraved in his memory, but little did he imagine at the time this would be where he would spend the majority of his life and meet his future wife Caroline.
Caroline was born & has grown up in the Eskdale Valley, working in the hospitality trade since she was eleven, running her own pet shop and picture framing business & then pub, she is now a big part in the running of West Lakes Adventure.
Her parents have farmed at Penny Hill Farm for over 35 years. The farm is situated in a beautiful location, nestled at the foot of Harter Fell. Once owned by Beatrix Potter, Penny Hill Farm is a picturesque working hill farm with small B&B and a self-catering cottage attached which holds special memories, as Penny Hill cottage is where their son Joe was born in August 2001.
Joe spends a lot of time having mini adventures with Steve & Caroline, exploring what the outdoors has to offer, due to this he has a very grown up approach to the life, respecting the area in which he lives and the type of life the family leads. He is a great skier, paddler & loves being in water.
Despite his love the outdoors, Joe wishes nothing more than not to follow in his dads footsteps, he is focused on carrying on his education, going to sixth form college & then university, with his keen knowledge of history & science, he very much wants to be a teacher when he grows up!
Buddy is the Patterdale Terrier who was rescued in April. The time was right for the family to get another dog after losing Scooby, the precious terrier who was such a big part of the family who sadly passed away in September 2012 at a ripe old age of 16 years & 3 days.
Not much is known about buddy’s past life, he was abandoned at the gates of the rescue centre & is between the age of 1 & 2 years old, so with not the best start in life, we can assure you he has certainly made up for it now & enjoys nothing more than going to work with his dad.
Although we are based in Eskdale we can operate anywhere in the UK and overseas, running programmes as far away as France, Boston, Malaysia & Australia.
Based where we are we have some of the best resources in the country available to run our activities on our doorstep.
We also maintain a high environmentaly friendly approach. We are focused on maintaining and respecting the natural landscape for us & future generations to enjoy & are very aware of the footprint some Outdoor providers can leave when they don't follow this same approach.
We respect and work closley with Landowners in the area to make sure thier livestock & land is not affected by what we do.
